Creating Scandi Interiors on a Budget

(Last Updated On: 15/09/2022)

Fresh, bright, minimalist and functional. If this is the interior you crave at home, then the Scandi style sounds like it’s the perfect fit for you! Redecorating can be an expensive task but there are plenty of cost-effective methods that can be taken to create brilliant Scandi styles without breaking the bank.

DECLUTTER!

At the heart of Scandinavian design is the minimalist approach. Therefore, decluttering should always be the first step when transforming your home into a Scandi haven. Take a tip out of Marie Kondo’s books and get rid of items that don’t bring you joy and ensure everything has its own place. This can be a great way to create funds to spend on styling your house as you may be able to sell belongings and furniture that you no longer need.

Keep it light!

One of the key aspects of Scandi design is light. For much of the year, Scandinavian countries spend more time in darkness than light, so it’s important to make their homes as bright as possible. The two key aspects to consider are wall colours and lighting accessories. White walls are synonymous with Scandi style and that’s because they reflect light! If you’re less keen on whitewashed walls, try other light palette colours which will reflect the maximum amount of light.

Embrace the Danish concept hygge by creating a cosy atmosphere that encourages positive wellbeing! A great way to achieve this is by adding candles or dimmer switches to your lights. Combine these with cushions and blankets to soften the space and you’ll feel like you’re in Scandinavia!

Quality over quantity

My third tip for creating Scandi style on a budget is to focus on quality not quantity. Rather than filling your space with new furniture, remember to keep it minimalist and functional. Concentrate on collecting a small number of high-quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Plenty of brilliant vintage pieces can be bought second-hand at a fraction of the cost and you can upcycle old pieces that might just need some TLC!

Why is Scandi design so popular?

Modern Scandi design emerged in the 1950s in America and Europe and it is no surprise that is has stood the test of time as its key principals are creating affordable, practical and sleek spaces. And, beyond that, Scandinavian and Nordic imports are becoming ever-more popular outside the region.

You only have to look at the emergence of culture and pastimes from countries like Sweden and Denmark to see the influences leaving northern Europe. In terms of entertainment, books, films and brooding crime dramas like Caliphate and The Killing have proven themselves to be welcome additions to English-speaking TV. While looking to product exports, the smoking alternative snus has become much more popular, with residents of countries like the UK and Canada able to order it at taxfreesnus to be delivered to their homes.

Also, Scandinavian countries consistently ranked among the happiest countries in the world, which is partly due to their equal working practices creating high levels of satisfaction. Models such as open-plan offices that remove hierarchical structures, like those used in Scandinavia, have become increasingly present elsewhere internationally in recent years.

Ultimately, the rest of the world just can’t get enough of Scandi life! All you need to achieve a stunning Scandi interior is to keep it light, minimalist and cosy, which can be achieved without making a dent in your bank balance. Happy designing!
